Action on the Social Determinants of Tuberculosis: Are Social Protection Interventions the Way Forward?"
In 2009 Mario Raviglione, Director of the Stop TB Department, suggested that better tuberculosis control required investment not only in diagnostics, treatment, and health systems, but also in development initiatives addressing the social determinants of tuberculosis, including social protection interventions (such as cash transfer programs). However, practical ideas for action are still scarcer than is notional support for this approach. This symposium will explore how this agenda should be taken forward.

Preventive Medicine 2012: Healthy Families, Healthy Communities
Preventive Medicine 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Preventive Medicine, is the premier event for professionals in disease prevention and health promotion. Preventive Medicine 2012 will be featuring state-of-the-art educational sessions and skill building institutes within three conference tracks: Clinical Preventive and Lifestyle Medicine, Public Health Practice, and Prevention Policy. Proposed topics will address prenatal and well child care, obesity, correctional health, breast feeding, food policy, health IT, behavioral economics, entrepreneurism, emergency preparedness, behavioral issues in the uniformed services, cancer prevention, and HIV prevention. In addition, Preventive Medicine 2012 will present sessions on medical quality and career development.

The Union North America Region Meeting: 16th Annual Conference
The 16th Annual Conference of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease will be held February 23-25, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The secretariat welcomes the submission of abstracts for poster and oral presentations of research on all aspects of TB control, including epidemiologic, clinical, basic science, nursing, social, behavioral, psychosocial, and educational studies, or outcomes of program initiatives.

2nd World Conference of Women's Shelters
The 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters (WCWS) will bring together shelter advocates and grassroots activists working to end violence against women to discuss how they can support and learn from each other. WCWS will continue the global momentum that addresses violence against women and the cross-country collaboration and coordination that is required to address victims’ safety and rights world-wide. Conference Tracks include: Shelter Practices & Sustainability; Building Partnerships to Sustain and Enhance Services; Addressing Barriers and Creating Access; International & Cross-Border Issues; Empowering and Supporting Advocates, Activists, and Allies; and Other. Issues of HIV/AIDS will be discussed.

Project ECHO (Extending Community Health Outcomes)
The F/C AETC is replicating the Project ECHO model (Extending Community Health Outcomes) created by the University of New Mexico (http://echo.unm.edu/). This model uses a live audio-video-based platform to provide educational experiences through the creation of a learning network comprised of clinicians serving HIV/AIDS patients (novice to expert) throughout the region. These sessions will contain brief didactic presentations, case presentations, and an opportunity for networking.
