ALERT to provide drug-resistant TB treatment

Addis Ababa, December 12, 2011 (ENA) - ALERT Hospital here on Monday announced that it will commence providing treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) patients as of 13 December 2011.

According to a press release it sent to ENA, about 300 drug-resistant TB patients are expected to get access to the treatment annually.

ALERT will be the 3rd Hospital to provide the treatment next to St Paul Hospital and Gondar University.

TB Care Ethiopia built the drug-resistant TB treatment department with the finance secured from USAID, it said.

The number of drug-resistant TB patients in Ethiopia is estimated to be more than 5,200.

Ethiopia ranks 16th among the world's high-burden drug-resistant TB countries, the statement said.
