OAFLA President Called First Ladies of African Countries to Prevent HIV/AIDS

Addis Ababa, January 30, 2012 (ENA) -The President of OAFLA and First Lady of Namibia, Penehupifo Pohamba said over the past five years OAFLA has been implementing activities focusing on the promotion of the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT).

Addressing the 11th General Assembly of OAFLA on Monday, Pohamba said in most of the African countries lack of male involvement in the PMTCT program is a challenge.

She called all OAFLA members to join hands to launch a continental campaign to raise aggressive participation by male partners in the fight against HIV infection.

She said effective communication, advocacy and networking are fundamental to our work.

She emphasized that the First Ladies have the power to advocate, raise awareness and mobilize financial support and effect positive change.

Addressing the General Assembly, Ethiopian First Lady Azeb Mesfin said empowering women is key to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

She further said empowerment gives women the knowledge and the strength to protect themselves from the infection.

She called first ladies of African countries to continue their struggle to empower women.
