Term Definition
Western Blot

An HIV test that detects the different types of antibodies that the immune system has sent to destroy the different parts of the HIV virus. It is usually used to confirm an inconclusive or positive ELISA test.

Window Period

The time between exposure to HIV and the time it can take for the body to develop HIV antibodies (usually three months). An HIV test taken during this period can produce a negative result, although the person may still be HIV-positive.
