Prevalence
In 2005, urban and regional areas of the Tigray region had an
estimated adult HIV prevalence rate of 4.2%. There were 88,498
people living with HIV (PLHIV), of which 7,998 were children.
There were 10,617 new HIV infections, 2,256 of them children;
and 7,938 new AIDS cases, 1,473 of them children. The number of
deaths attributed to AIDS-related illnesses was 7,372, of which
1,416 were children. There were also 286,112 orphans, of which
35,188 were AIDS orphans.
Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
The number of VCT clients for the region was 33,048, of which
4,441 (13.4%) tested positive. Of these, 19,725 were male, of
which 2,619 (13%) tested positive; and 13,323 were female, of
which 1,822 (13.7%) tested positive.
Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT)
There were 7,767 HIV-positive pregnancies in the region with 2,256
resulting in HIV-positive births. However, the PMTCT program reported
that among their 34,077 antenatal care (ANC) clients, 4,493 were
tested for HIV, of which 305 tested positive. Of these, 135 (44.3%)
women received nevirapine (NVP) medication for PMTCT. 95 babies
also received NVP, and 264 ANC mothers received counseling on
infant feeding.
Antiretroviral treatment (ART)
There were an estimated 16,341 people in the region needing ART.
However, the nine ART sites in the region reported that only 2,517
people were receiving ART. The total of all clients who had ever
received ART at these sites was 3,286.
Ethiopia Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) Statistics
The statistics from the 2005 EDHS indicate a 2.1% HIV prevalence
rate, with a 4.2% estimate of prevalence among pregnant women.
